CSKA Moscow vs VfL Wolfsburg Preview 25/11/2009 Champions League - Group B

CSKA enter the match on the back of the derby win over Spartak Moscow and only a win over Wolfsburg leaves them in contention for the second place in the group. The Germans are three points clear of CSKA, which means even a draw would be a great result but Wolves are not the team that know how to play defensive football.

CSKA need a win

This season have not been all that successful for one of the biggest Russian teams but next week can change a lot pf things. CSKA first host Wolfsburg in an attempt to remain in contention for the place in the Champions League knockout stages before hosting Saturn in the final league game, searching for points needed to secure another season of Champions League football. Leonid Slutsky’s side recorded a morale-boosting win over fierce rivals Spartak last weekend and they enter this match in very good spirits. The Army Men continued the impressive scoring run with three goals against Spartak and when we know they also scored three at Old Trafford, we see a great value in backing CSKA to score over 1.5 goals at 2.20 offered by Boylesports.

Boss Leonid Slutsky has no fresh injury worries and is expected to field the same team that started the Spartak game. This means that Necid will start as a lone striker but he will have a big support from in-form Krasic and Dzagoev, and it is these two players that provide the perfect link between midfield and attack. Alan Dzagoev scored a beautiful goal at Old Trafford, while he also got on the scoresheet against Spartak and we can see him scoring against Wolfsburg. Therefore, you should know Bet365 pays 3.25 on Dzagoev to score.

Wolfsburg ended the good run

Wolfsburg didn’t need a lot of time to show they deserved to play in the Champions League and they are now on the brink of reaching the knockout stages. The Wolves are three points clear of third-placed CSKA and one point from Russia would virtually see them go through. However, this is a team that play to win in every single game and that is what makes them so special. With Dzeko and Grafite still forming one of the best attacking partnerships in Europe, we don’t see how they can fail to score in Moscow. Sportingbet pays 1.36 on Wolfsburg to score.

Coach Armin Veh will have full squad to choose from with Barzagli and Ziani back in contention after coming late from international duty, which prevented them from making the squad for the Nurnberg game. Wolfsburg lost the game 3:2 but despite the defeat, we don’t expect the boss to make too many changes to the starting line-up. The Wolves look very close to clinching their place in the knockout stages and you should consider backing Wolfsburg to go through at 1.30 offered by Betfair.

Betting verdict

We expect to see a very open game between the two attack-minded teams and even though Wolfsburg only need one point, we are positive they will play attacking football. The attacking potential the two managers have at their disposal should guarantee us plenty of goals on this cold Wednesday evening in Moscow.
