Six out of ten Catalans feel safe in their municipalities, despite a slight increase crime

The Minister on the Interior, Joan Saura, presented the data revealing the 2009 Report of the Securitate in Catalonia, based on interviews with 14,983 residents in Catalonia, over 16 years of age, that were made during the first quarter of 2009 on their memories of crime from 2008

Six out of ten Catalans feel safe in their municipalities, despite a slight increase in reported crimes.
The perception of public safety is maintained in Catalonia, with an average rating of 6.1 out of 10, despite a small increase in record crimes and misdemeanours, with 57.64 people per 1,000 recorded, an increase of 2.03 points per thousand inhabitants compared to the previous year.

The Minister on the Interior, Joan Saura, presented the data revealing the 2009 Report of the Securitate in Catalonia, based on interviews with 14,983 residents in Catalonia, over 16 years of age, that were made during the first quarter of 2009 on their memories of crime from 2008.

Thus, 54.2% of Catalans consider security in their town remains the same as the previous year, while 20.9% believe it has improved and 19.9% felt it was worse.

The Girona region is where the perception of safety suffered its biggest fall, from 6.4 to 5.8.

The residents of the Camp de Tarragona and Terres de l'Ebre are the ones, according to the report, with the greater perception of improvement in public safety (31.3% and 30.4%, respectively), while the West Pyrenees scored the best with 7.2 out of 10.

The report also highlighted an increase in complaints about violence against women, which have risen from 11,146 to 14,337 in 2008 and also growth of those arrested for crimes involving couples living together, in 2007, 5927 to 7543 in 2008.

According to the report, there has been little growth of crimes against property, which fall at a rate of 25.59 cases per thousand population (a growth of 1.57 points), while there was a lowering in attempted murders and murders with thefts rising slightly (6.30 per thousand inhabitants, 0.25 more than in 2007).

In number of officers per capita, Catalunya has 4.32 officers per thousand citizens, of which 1.92 are Mossos. Referring to road safety, 54.2% of Catalans considered it to have improved by almost 20% more than six years ago, coinciding with the lowest mortality figures from the past 30 years.
