Spain is below European average levels of digital literacy and media

Spain occupies 14th place among 27 European countries, which suggests the difficulty of the Spanish to function in the field of communication technologies.

This is one of the main conclusions of a study commissioned by the European Commission analyzing the ability of citizens to use media technologies (ICTs).

The study was conducted by the professor at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), José Manuel Perez Tornero, in collaboration with other European universities, reported the university in a statement.

Among the 27 countries studied, Spain is far behind countries such as Finland, Denmark, Netherlands, United Kingdom, France, Sweden, Luxembourg, Austria, Ireland, Belgium, Estonia and Germany, while leads to much of the former Eastern countries, as well as Greece and Portugal.

The indicator of the level of media literacy is particularly attentive to citizens' critical sense to persuasive messages in advertising and commercial information as well as their ability to access safe and beneficial use of the Internet.

The study also evaluates whether citizens are creative in their use of ICT and whether, through them, improve their level of active participation in public and political spheres.

The study, entitled Assessment Criteria for Media Literacy Levels (Criteria for Assessing the Media Literacy Levels), published this week on the website Media program of the European Commission, aims to provide the EC with the criteria that will evaluate regularly the degree of media literacy of citizens of the member states.

The report warns that low levels of media literacy is a major barrier to economic and cultural development and reveals a low level of personal autonomy in the context of the emerging knowledge society.
