Spain’s government estimates that one million self-employed people will benefit from new draft law
In addition, the provision will benefit all employed persons who, voluntarily, choose to pay insurance contributions for work accidents and occupational diseases.
The annoucment came from the Second Deputy Prime Minister Maria Teresa Fernandez de la Vega after the Council of Ministers gave its approval to the draft. According to Fernandez de la Vega, those who are entitled to collect this benefit are those who are forced to close their businesses, inadvertently, such as through accidents and occupational diseases.
The vice president stressed that self-employed workers involved in high risk activities represent a collective of more than 500,000 people. "But soon it will be about a million" because they have to develop contracts to become economically dependent and we should establish those activities that pose a higher risk, such as construction or transportation, he said.
In addition, the provision will benefit all employed persons who, voluntarily, choose to pay insurance contributions for work accidents and occupational diseases.
The requirement for all is that, before closing their businesses, they have contributed to both contingencies for at least twelve months.
The National Federation of Autonomous Workers Associations (ATA) believes that this provision is "insufficient and needs improvements," it does not respond to the needs of the self-employed when they cease work.
The union hoped that in the parliamentary process will be improved and correct deficiencies they highlighted in the draft.
