The population of Catalunya will reach eight million in 2021

The figures come from future increases in immigration and natural increases, according to the Statistical Institute of Catalonia (Idescat), which notes that the population will continue to grow but at a slower rate than that recorded in the last decade.

According to Catalan població Projeccions of 2021-2041, the future evolution of the Catalan population was characterized by progressive aging and territorial redistribution beyond the metropolitan area.

The age structure of the Catalan population in the third decade of the twentieth century will be different, as will the number of school-age population, but even more for over 65’s.

The population will grow in seven territorial areas of Catalunya, but with different intensities. The areas that will grow from now until 2021 will be Camp de Tarragona, the Girona region and central Catalonia.

Idescat projections indicate that during the next decade there will be a dissemination of population beyond the metropolitan districts of Barcelona.

Of the people who live in Catalunya, some 360,000 live in metropolitan counties and 400,000 in non-metropolitan. It also reduced the differences in demographic structures of the territorial areas, the result of the number of population over 65 years.
