30% of all bars measuring less than 100 square metres in Barcelona have decided to prevent customers from smoking in their establishments, according to a report made public yesterday by Barcelona’s Agencia de Salud Pública.

Lluís Guix, head of the Agencia de Salud Pública, stated that the data indicated that the law on tobacco - which came in to force six months ago - ‘is accepted and mostly followed.’

The public health agency also stated that it had received a total of 80 complaints relating to the law being broken.

Health authorities are forcing some people to choose between cancer and their livelihood. Barcelona's authorities are hypocritical and lie, the law is not accepted. They know that to allow smokers in less than 100 sq meters bars, etc has resulted in dangerous "ghettos" where workers - often self-employed owners- are subjected to proved unhealthy conditions. The current law allows children to be brought into such places and smokers gather, as everyone would expect, in the only places where they can smoke. Whether there is a case of interested mafia in bars and restaurants or sheer stupidity on Health Authorities that can and should change that, the outcome is disastrous.
It has been explained that many "small" bars tried to ban smoking at first, to find that their customers run away to competitors massively. They could not sustain the position.
