Artur Mas, CiU president, warns that the crisis has exposed that “we are poorer than we thought”.
According to Mas, in Spain and Catalunya we have no choice but to promote structural reforms, consider adjustments in the energy market, redefine the framework of industrial relations, "thin" administration and, ultimately, "collectively tighten their belts".
At a luncheon organized by the Independent Association of Joves Empresaris de Catalunya, Mas has warned that the country should be aware that the crisis has exposed that in recent years we have lived far above our real potential, "We are poorer than we thought". "Clearly some of the wealth we thought we had and we do not. And we must be prepared to assume that we are collectively 10% or 15% poorer than we were in 2007," has warned.
According to Mas, in Spain and Catalunya we have no choice but to promote structural reforms, consider adjustments in the energy market, redefine the framework of industrial relations, "thin" administration and, ultimately, "collectively tighten their belts". "This has a cost and we must assume it. And the more we delay, the longer it will take to come out of the situation we have," warned the opposition leader.
In trying for an accord in an anti-crisis plan, Mas has called for "modesty and humility" from the Government, to assume any proposal by the opposition. This formula of "humility" of the executive and "generosity" of the opposition, he pointed out, was now possible in Catalonia.
