The food and catering sector in Catalonia has registered an increase in the sale of Catalan cava in response to the boycott of this product in the rest of Spain, according to a report today by the secretary general of the Confederación de Comerç de Cataluña (CCC), Miguel Ángel Fraile.
The response from citizens in Catalonia is due to, according to Fraile, the fact that ‘in Catalonia we have felt annoyed and it is a way of demonstrating that the cava boycott is absurd.’ For the secretary general, the increase, which he failed to provide any definitive percentage for, ‘is a way in which citizens have an opportunity to compensate the Catalan cava companies, though this compensation will not cover 100% of the losses produced by the boycott.’
Fraile said that ‘specialised shops, hypermarkets, supermarkets and restaurants have had notable increases.’ On the other hand, he said that anecdotal evidence suggests that the situation in the rest of Spain ‘is normalising’, adding that ‘income from the sale of Catalan cava is greater than those which are not.’
The CCC’s Fraile also explained that sales in the clothing, electronics and sporting sectors have grown higher this Christmas - by between 5% and 10% - when compared to those of last year.
