ERC’s Xavier Vendrell planted bombs for Catalan separatist group ‘Terra Lliure’
The ex-minister, and party finance manager of the Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya (ERC) - Vendrell was the person behind the letters sent to Catalan government workers demanding the payment of party funding donations - acknowledged before High Court judge Carlos Bueren in 1992 that he had participated in two Tierra Lliure terrorist attacks.
His active involvement in Tierra Lliure covered the period between March 1989 and June 1991. It was during this period that he participated in attacks against an office of the INEM in the Barcelona district of Hospitalet de Llobregat and on 7 April 1990, in Olesa de Montserrat, against hydro-electric power company Hidroeléctricas del Segre.
Vendrell is said to have picked out the attack targets and to have been the Terra Lliure head for Bajo Llobregat.
In his court testimony, he stated that both of the explosive devices had been built and placed by him.
The judge allowed Vendrell to remain out of prison through the payment of a 500,000 Peseta bail.
