Michelin Promotes El Celler de Can Roca, the Girona Three Stars
El Celler de Can Roca, the Girona venue run by head chef Joan Roca and his brothers Josep and Jordi, is Spain’s latest to attain top ranking in the French dining guide
This time. After years of disappointment in the gastronómco environment, the restaurant claimed the highest honour of the red guide for which is considered one of the best restaurants, chefs and critics yesterday uttered a predictable "It was time."
Joan Roca, who runs the resaurant with two brothers, received all types of congratulations and could finally breath a little easier.
The news, as predicted a month ago in La Vanguardia, was announced last night before a large and eager audience among which there were cooks, politicians, journalists and friends at a Michelin gala celebration of the centenary of the guide publication in Spain. Those attending the festival, in Madrid's San Miguel market, were able to taste the various positions in the working of Santi Santamaria, Oscar Velasco, Paco Roncero and Sergi Arola.
Josep-in charge of room and sommelier, and Jordi-dessert-maker, decided at the last moment to travel to Madrid with their partners not to miss the big moment. The Celler customers came to dinner last night in a two-star and finished the dessert in a restaurant three star. "There have been days when the sensitivity was close to the surface," declared Joan Roca. We have received many tokens of affection and admiration and I feel extremely happy today by both the award and for the work we do, we have long asked for this recognition and it comes in a memorable year for us".
Joan is sure that the life of El Celler will not change too much with their new status, "but we feel that there are many eyes watching us and they expect much from us. We are especially protected and loved, but that attention produces a high" .
The award is to reward one of the most beloved families in the gastronomic environment. "I do not know how we got here," Joan confessed last night. But I know that people like us. Maybe because we grew up in a working class neighbourhood, in a humble house on the outskirts of Girona and we have never forgotten who we are and where we came from".
“Spain & Portugal 2010” costs 25.50 euros ($38) and will also go on sale in France in mid-December.
