Tourists and Barcelona residents alike should be advised to exercise caution and monitor developments that might affect your safety because of the risk of terrorism and street crime in Spain. While this warning should be on your mind daily as a general rule, the potential for harm increases immediately before the elections scheduled for March 9, 2008. We urge you to be mindful of personal security and monitor the media for information about possible new safety and security risks.
Be aware that public demonstrations, particularly in the Basque Country, can spark violent incidents despite best efforts by Spanish authorities. Additional police officers are on the job most are well-equipped and highly trained. Yet, in September 2007, supporters of Basque independence organized a protest march in San Sebastian which turned violent. Casual onlookers are advised to avoid demonstrations and large public gatherings as they possess the potential for violence.
Before venturing out, organize a variety of ways of accessing your money overseas, such as credit cards, travelers' cheques and cash. Check with your bank whether your ATM card will work overseas. Credit card and ATM fraud, often involving sophisticated equipment, is increasing in Spain. You are advised to use ATMs located in the bank lobby whenever possible. In case you are robbed, make two photocopies of valuables such as your passport, tickets, visas and travelers' cheques. Keep one copy with you in a separate place to the original and leave another copy with someone at home. While traveling, don't carry too much cash and remember that expensive watches, diamonds, cameras, and other valuables may make you a target for crime especially petty street thieves.
