Spanish society has changed tolerant and youth liberal regards sexual relationships and abortion.
One in two Spanish belonging to the first group, are those who advocate mainstream values of society, the second would be "the typical smart-ass" in the third includes the disenchanted left, and the most characteristic feature of the latter are those that defend the death penalty.
"Living without thinking about tomorrow", "take a chance on something new", "live as you like" imputed values traditionally attributed to the young, are increasingly made by Spanish society in general.
This is one of the main conclusions of "social values and drugs, 2010" held by the Foundation for Help Against Drug Addiction (FAD), Caja Madrid and the Government Delegation for the National Drug Pan presented today highlighting the process of "juvenilización" that has occurred in Spain in the last ten years.
The research analyzes, through 1,200 household interviews with persons aged 15 to 64, the scale of values of Spanish society and its evolution in relation to certain behaviours such as drug use, abortion or euthanasia.
It notes a "remarkable tolerance" with regard to private morality (abortion, euthanasia, homosexual relationships ..), a clear rejection of sanctioned behaviours that affect others (stealing, cheating, drunk driving ..) and intermediate positions against behaviours among public and private (cheat on taxes, drinking or smoking in public places).
Just over 60% considered euthanasia acceptable, 54% supported a total freedom for abortion and homosexual relationships have the support of 44% of Spanish society (the group that justifies this trend is between 35-45 years .)
In the death penalty, almost 36% of respondents justified their application for very serious crimes, when in 2001 this share reached 27%. The tolerance of this practice further increases in the age group 15-24 years. Just under a quarter of the population considered it legitimate to smoking in public buildings and more than 20% justifies suicide.
Eusebio Mejías, FAD's technical director, said that it has no easy explanation for the justification for euthanasia is almost 40 percentage points higher than that of suicide, while asked to reflect on the fact that there is more tolerance for the death penalty than against smoking in public places.
For its part, the Director of Programming, Caja Madrid, Maria Fernanda Ayán, has highlighted some "paradoxes" of the study and that 70% considered alcohol as a hazardous substance, but 50% consumed consumed it. In this sense, Mejias has stressed that the Spanish position regarding drugs is marked by ambiguity and, although it is not true that it trivialized them, they are a function of their consumption, "which deals mainly with the fact it is fun. "
The research concludes that there is a typology of the Spanish, that can be divided into four types: the "integrated citizen" (47.5%), "the selfish militant from conservatism" (21.5%), the "transgressor" (16.2%) and "asocial from the disparagement of the other" (14.8%), said its author, Javier Elzo, professor of sociology at the University of Deusto.
