Speaker of the Catalan parliament Ernest Benach praises truth of ‘Salvador’ film
The director of Salvador, Manuel Huerga, charts the life of the young anarchist, killed by garrotte after being accused of murdering a Civil Guard officer. Goodbye Lenin star Daniel Brühl plays Puig Antich, the penultimate execution victim of the Franco regime.
“Unfortunately in Catalonia we don’t have much cinema which explains our true history,” Benach said, noting that Spain was now reconsidering its past, in particular the four decades of Franco’s dictatorship.
The Catalan Republican Left politician recalled that the execution of the anarchist spurred him to start “committing myself to the fight against injustice, barbarity and fascism.” According to the film’s director, Spain “has forgotten the Franco regime too quickly.””
