Where best to invest E200k from Barcelona flat sale?
Both their children - Luc, now three, and Nico, nine months - were born in Spain, and the family plan to remain indefinitely as they have set up their own companies. While Mr Doane runs tourism and accommodation websites for Barcelona, Mrs Doane is a wedding planner.
She said: "We like the climate, food and lifestyle here, with mountains and the sea close by. Also, it is exciting learning a language and the culture here means life is never dull."
They bought a two-bedroom apartment just off La Rambla, the famous street in central Barcelona in January 2003 for €162,000 and sold it at the beginning of November for €250,000. They used some of the money to buy a family car, and put the rest in their Barclays Current Account in Spain.
She said: "It was purely an investment property which we rented to tourists. We sold the apartment because we believe the property market is now over-priced in the region and didn't wish to be unable to sell it if the market stagnates.
"We want to know how best to safely invest the money we have from the property sale and make some money off it, while being able to get at it quickly if the housing market falls; and we want to buy something to live in."
