Mike Jennings-Bates | Coventry, United Kingdom | 1st December 06 - Ricardo Domingo Claros
In 1965 or 1966 we were delighted to meet a young Spaniard called Ricardo Domingo Claros whose father had sent him to England to gain experience of the printing industry here in Coventry.
I was employed by the firm that he visited. Ricardo's own father owned a local printing company in Barcelona I seem to remember.
My wife and I befriended Ricardo and he stayed with our family for a few weeks, coming with us on our holidays to the island of Anglesey in north Wales. As it sometimes became a little boring for him I arranged for him to do some work for one of my clients who owned a zoo.
Sadly a little while after Ricardo returned home to Spain his young replacement at the zoo was attacked by a hippopotamus and badly injured. His life only being saved by a keeper who remembered that the hippo was once in a circus and had been taught to open his mouth on command and giving this command allowed the young man to escape. The command was 'Open Harry'.
We were very relieved that Ricardo had gone back to his home in Barcelona and was not the keeper who was injured.
We have often wondered what became of this very good mannered, handsome young man. We are now at the time of retirement from our own printing company and would love to have contact with him again.
If you believe you can help us locate him, please contact Barcelona Reporter with whatever information you have available.
Thank you.
