Spain: Big rise in swine flu H1N1 in schools
A swine flu outbreak in Madrid-area schools is spreading and has now sickened 121 students, nearly double the number from just a few days ago, the Health Ministry said Tuesday.
A total of 17 Madrid-area schools are affected, up from three on Friday, when 66 students were confirmed with swine flu. The ministry said most of the cases at the schools were mild.
The ministry did not given a nationwide figure for swine flu. But the new cases, added to the ministry's previous numbers, raises the overall figure to at least 346 cases.
Officials have previously insisted that most of Spain's cases involved people who had recently returned from hard-hit countries like Mexico and the United States, or had been in contact with someone who had traveled there.
But a ministry official said Tuesday the swine flu virus was now spreading "more and more in a generalized fashion." The official spoke on condition of anonymity in line with ministry policy.
