The first pilot project will be presented in coming days, has been made after signing a supply agreement with Endesa.

Telefónica has designed a phone booth ready to charge electric cars and will shortly present the first pilot project, informed the company.

Cabitel, the subsidiary of Telefonica which handles the phone booths, with some 15,000 that could be adapted to charge electric vehicles.

The project will reportedly launch in Madrid before spreading to other areas, although the plan still requires approval by city councils.

The scheme could be a cost-effective way to provide a charging infrastructure in Spanish towns. It would also provide a use for telephone booths, which are increasingly becoming redundant due to the popularity of mobile phones.

Spain's socialist government wants to see up to 250,000 electric cars on the country's roads by 2014.
