The expansion plan of the Instituto de Cervantes has “stopped” due to the economic crisis.
Caffarel cited the increasing demand for language teachers in Brazil or the Philippines.
Salamanca: The director of the Instituto Cervantes, Carmen Caffarel, acknowledged that the current economic crisis has meant that the expansion plan of this institution promoting the study of Spanish "has stopped".
Caffarel qualified that the current global financial situation has meant that institutions have had to "put the brakes" on projects such as increasing the number of offices of the Institute.
Currently, Cervantes has 78 centres in different countries, in addition to the two existing headquarters in Madrid.
Anyway, she said that they have resumed some growth initiatives and innovations including the opening of classrooms in San Francisco (United States), which "would be an investment for the future", and on Korean soil.
The studying of Spanish brings "a lot of money and many jobs to the country's economy and for this reason indicated that further work is needed.
The director of the Cervantes Institute also noted that it is expected that Spanish is the second most spoken language in the United States within 40 years due to the presence of the Hispanic community.
In this regard, she noted that "Spanish has become a career opportunity and a very important business tool" and it shows, according to the director of the Institute, in the increasing number in applicants for teaching language.
Caffarel was present at the second edition of International Teachers of Spanish conference, which is held until July 2 at the Palacio de Congresos de Salamanca. It boasts about 600 participants from twenty countries.
