Spain’s Congress rejects the prohibition of the ‘burqa’ in Spain.
In her view, there is "concern" in Spain over the issue of the full veil "as shown in the resolutions adopted by different Catalan municipalities and the Senate, and this is why we consider it justified to promote the adoption of this resolution".
The plenary session of Congress, on Tuesday, rejected with 183 votes against and 169 in favour, the motion, sponsored by the Popular Party, which was intended to urge the Government to adopt the necessary measures to prevent nationwide integral veiling ('burqa' or 'niqab') in public spaces or public events.
During his speech before the House, the People's spokesperson Soraya Saenz de Santamaria has criticized the PSOE on this issue and asserted that "it is high time to agree." It is very difficult to understand that his party is free to advocate that those who renounce their freedom and identity and I find it very difficult to understand that while our troops fight for freedom in Afghanistan, while the Government lacks the courage to defend them here in Spain".
Specifically, the proposal of the 'popular party' would urge the Government to "ban" in public spaces and events something that "that hides the face and hinders the identification of the person and their visual communication, because it is a discrimination that is not covered by freedom of religion to be contrary to the dignity of persons".
