In Spain there are 13.5 million plastic bags used per year, generating thousands of tons of waste. If these data are extrapolated from the total set, only 13 percent of commercial bags are made of paper, while for the remaining 87 percent used its plastic.
The minister explained that "it is not eliminating the use of plastic bags, but to sensitize the population to change their usage habits." The challenge according to MARM, "is that the shopping bag consumption, single-use drop by 50% and through a timetable for replacing non-biodegradable plastics, can be reached."
This information campaign and awareness is framed within the National Integrated Waste Project (PNIR), 2008-2015 approved by the Government of Spain. Among the measures taken it makes special mention of the "reduction of 50% by weight, consumption of commercial bags for single use from 2010 and the replacement of at least 70% of bags with biodegradable ones within the time limit for implementation of this plan.
