Representatives of the UN body met with members of the Construction Board,
A UNESCO committee met today in Barcelona with representatives of the Construction Board of the ‘Holy Family church’ to assess the impact that the AVE route may have on the temple designed by the modernist architect Antoni Gaudí.
After the meeting, which lasted about two hours, the president-delegate of the Construction Board, Joan Rigol, has been "heartened" by the interest of UN agency, reported sources from the Board. Rigol also explained that the interview with technicians have addressed two key issues.
On the one hand, representatives of the Board have highlighted the dangers posed by working in the sandy soil on which the temple sits. On the other hand, they have warned that the passage of the AVE would create a variation on the surface of the temple and the drainage of water, which could affect the foundations of the cathedral.
The visit of the UNESCO committee takes place after the World Heritage Committee of the United Nations body, that met in Seville last June, decided not to include the Gaudí project in the list of World Heritage in Danger. It is expected that the experts who have reviewed today the Holy Family publish share their findings within a month.
