An outbreak of legionnaires’ disease has affected four people in Premià de Mar (Barcelona).
Since the incubation period is approximately ten days, it is possible that new cases may appear in the coming days.
The outbreak has affected two men and two women, two of which are doing well in Mataro Hospital, while the other two have already been discharged from hospital.
Symptoms of the observed cases began on 21 June and those responsible for the Epidemiological Surveillance Unit are conducting epidemiological surveys of those affected and making follow-up tests, reported the Health Department and the mayor of Premià de Mar in a statement.
The Health Department has inspected the cooling system, all located outside the urban case Premià de Mar and located within a radius of 2.5 kilometres, and ordered preventive disinfection treatment.
They have been inspected, closed and disinfected with spray irrigation and nebulizers located in the area of study, and samples were taken for analysis, the statement said.
The Department of Health advises that Legionella is not spread by person-person contact, and that tap water is safe to drink (both in homes and in public sources).
