Argentine striker and FC Barcelona player Lionel Messi awarded with the French Onze d’Or prize
The Argentine has won his latest award despite competition from 57 other candidates, among whom were his Barca companions, Valdés, Alves, Piqué, Puyol, Touré, Xavi, Iniesta, Ibrahimovic and Henry
The French magazine Onze Mondial has named Messi after being chosen by readers of the publication as the best footballer of the year. Messi accepted the new award after having already received the best player of the Champions League and the best player in the La League last season, and is awaiting delivery, in December, as FIFA World Player of the Ball Gold, where some people view him as the favourite.
The Argentine has won his latest award despite competition from 57 other candidates, among whom were his Barca companions, Valdés, Alves, Piqué, Puyol, Touré, Xavi, Iniesta, Ibrahimovic and Henry, so the Barca team had ten players nominated ahead of the eight nominees for Manchester United.
Other prominent players like Maradona, Platini, Van Basten, Matthaus, Zidane, Henry and Kaka have won this award since 1976.
