Barcelona, Ciutat Vella install a special prosecutor for security.
The authorities seem to have conspired to combat the activities of pickpockets and thieves operating in Ciutat Vella. The Autonomous Police want to intensify preventive work the streets, even creating a plan to suppress drug dealing on the public thoroughfare, the home Office has also joined forces. A prosecutor working in the district since last July, confirmed yesterday the head of the Office of Barcelona, Martin Rodriguez Sol, instigator of the re-emergence of this plan that worked in the 90s.

This month the special prosecutor was involved to improve and coordinate work with that of the Autonomous Police and the Guardia Urbana. However, the Office reported that the office responsible for this renewed initiative will combine it with other common tasks within the scope of the prosecution. The prosecution is pending a study on the appropriateness of requesting restraining orders for common thieves. This is one of the new government measures to fight the thieves and dealers, who every day make life miserable for residents and tourists alike. The prosecution recalled yesterday that during 2008, in the Catalan capital there was 80,000 larceny-theft offences which accounts for 75 percent of the crimes and misdemeanours registered in Barcelona.

The latest police statistics with data from 2009, including figures the summer, show that in Barcelona there is a daily average of 315 thefts of more than 400 euros.

This crime is the scourge that has forced governments to join forces and seek new ways to solve the problem that plagues several districts of the city. Among the proposals already mentioned, the Public Ministry is also studying the recovery of arrest under the Criminal Code that was removed in 1995. The recovery of this punishment would involve legislative reforms that are never fast. If achieved, this would lead to many young offenders spending weeks or months in prison. In this capacity, which existed in the 90s, it will seek to reduce the high number of thefts that were recorded in the downtown areas of Barcelona.
