Barcelona hospital has opened a disciplinary case against the doctor patient details on the street

The inquiry said the information found did not exceed 40 pages, containing a list of monitored cardiac transplant patients - dated March 2007 - and some discharge reports

Barcelona hospital has opened a disciplinary case against the doctor who left patient details on the street.

The papers contained the personal details of 173 transplant patients beside a container for recycling paper.

It appears the papers were kept at the persons home, although they no longer worked at the hospital. T he person ivolved left the hospital in 2008. When moving from their home, the person went to threw the documents into the container, but as it was blocked, left them on the floor in a garbage bag.

The Clinic said that although his actions was "seriously negligent", it has been established that there "was not any intent". Upon learning of this incident, the person involved went to the Hospital Management Centre to communicate their identity, acknowledged the incident and the seriousness of the facts in a letter, and apologized to both the centre and the patients. Moreover, they have offered to take steps to repair the damage.

The inquiry said the information found did not exceed 40 pages, containing a list of monitored cardiac transplant patients - dated March 2007 - and some discharge reports.

The hospital said that despite what has happened, the centre "scrupulously" upholds the data protection legislation, which has binding internal rules for employees involved in disciplinary proceedings.

The inquiry commission consisted of representatives of the medical leadership of the General Service, Security Service of the centre, the medical records and corporate legal services.
