Bordeaux vs Olympiakos 2-1 Result Aggregate Score 3-1 Goals UEFA Champions League 17/03/2010
The match seemed like a done deal after a further uneventful first half, with Bordeaux coming closer to a second goal, than the Greek side to the equalizer.
Bordeaux again too strong for Olympiakos - French champions Girondins Bordeaux reached the quarter finals of the Champions League Wednesday at the cost of Greek side Olympiakos. As in the first game, the French won by a one goal margin
Already after five minutes Bordeaux opened the score with a free-kick goal from attacking midfielder Yoann Gourcuff. The French prodigy curled the ball into the goal of Antonis Nikopolidis, who looked slightly badly positioned. For the entire first half Bordeaux remained the dominating side, holding on to the ball and not giving away any chances. The match seemed like a done deal after a further uneventful first half, with Bordeaux coming closer to a second goal, than the Greek side to the equalizer.
But in the second half the tide turned, to such an extent that Olympiakos for a short while had real chances to an upset. The match turned, ironically after Olympiakos´ English striker Matt Derbyshire was sent off after a second yellow card. In the 65th minute, a man down, substitute Kostas Mitroglou scored the equalizer for Olympiakos, meaning the Greek side only needed one more goal to knock Bordeaux out of the tournament.
Matters got worse for the French team when minutes after the equalizer Alou Diarra was sent off. In a nervy, tense final phase of the match Bordeaux staggered but didn’t fall. Bravo was close to scoring the second goal for the re-energized Greek champions, but it was ultimately Bordeaux´ super-striker Marouane Chamakh, rumoured to transfer to Arsenal in the summer, who ended all Greek hopes in the 88th minute of the game with a superb header. A frustrated Olympiakos saw Olof Mellberg receive a red card after the final whistle for arguing with referee Bartolo Benquerenca.
