British teenager Grace Ford dead loses fight for life after plunging seven storeys resort of Magaluf
The 17-year-old Grace Ford had been in a critical condition after falling seven storeys following a night out in the resort of Magaluf.
A teenage schoolgirl who plunged 90ft in a hotel tragedy in Spain has lost her fight for life after developing an infection in hospital.
Grace Ford died in Majorca, with her parents Chris and Suzanne at her bedside, 12 days after the accident.
The 17-year-old had been in a critical condition after falling seven storeys following a night out in the resort of Magaluf.
Family friend Steve Hall said she died ‘after fighting an infection that really took its toll’.
He added: 'She was the most wonderful girl. Everyone is going to miss her terribly. She has fought like a tiger, she has fought it as hard as anyone could.’
Miss Ford, a private schoolgirl from Greenhalgh, near Kirkham, Lancashire, was trying to sneak out of a male friend’s apartment in the early hours of the morning because visitors were banned from the rooms.
But she lost her footing and broke both her legs, her pelvis and suffering internal bleeding.
She developed an infection in Son Dureta hospital in the capital Palma where her parents Christopher and Suzanne kept a constant vigil.
They were at her bedside when she passed away.
Today, tributes were paid to the keen horserider, hockey player and athlete.
Mr Hall said: 'She was a brilliant scholar, outstanding horsewoman and a fine athlete. We would like to thank people for their support and ask now to be able to grieve in private.'
Miss Ford had just finished her A-Levels at £8,5000-a-year Kirkham Grammar, near Preston, and was holidaying with school friends when the accident happened at 5.30am on Saturday July, 17.
Carl MacKenzie, joint owner of the Elswick Equestrian Centre in Elswick, near Preston, where Miss Ford kept her horse, Vespa, for 18 months, said: 'She was a nice happy, friendly girl. She was friendly to everybody and spoke to everybody.
'We're all thinking of her family. She'll be missed.'
Miss Ford had met British holidaymaker, Edward Soppet, 18, the night of the accident.
She went back to the Torrenova apartment block in Punta Ballena where he was staying.
Mr Soppet, from Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire, was alleged to have helped the teenager climb out of the window, which he thought led to another part of the apartment block, when she decided to leave.
But the window was seven floors up and she fell into an inside courtyard, breaking both legs.
He was arrested and appeared in court accused of failing to help in connection with the accident.
According to local reports from the island, doctors spent around 90 minutes stabilising Miss Ford in the apartment block before she was put on a stretcher and taken to Son Dureta.
Although her condition was described as 'critical' at first and she was in an induced coma, she had begun to improve.
