Catalonia’s Bullfighting ban threatens Spanish economy and jobs
Catalonian politicians justified their decision by claiming that bullfighting has already lost popularity in Spain, but supporters of the sport say that the ban will not only eliminate a huge part of Spanish culture, it will also cost the country many jobs—jobs that Spain cannot afford to lose with its current 20 percent unemployment rate.
Although animal rights activists are pleased with the Catalonian government’s decision this week to ban bullfighting—which will take effect in 2012—critics say that the law is a politically-based decision that will be detrimental to the Spanish economy.
Among the workers who will lose their livelihoods when the ban goes into effect are the current bullfighters, the students who will have to kiss their aspirations of becoming a bullfighter goodbye, the schools that teach bullfighting, and the people who work at bullfighting venues. In addition, there are costume designers and bull breeders who will also be affected by the ban.
Despite this enormous loss of jobs, animal rights activists say that the cruelty to animals outweighs the death of the bullfighting industry.
