Economic crisis threatens oriental bazaars major Chinese business community in Catalonia
However Badalonesa Police, in collaboration with the regional and national police seized, in 2008, counterfeit goods valued at 24.5 million
Employers are reluctant to leave, but are seeking opportunities in Madrid and abroad.
Sales of oriental bazaars have fallen by 50%. Each day fewer Chinese containers enter the port of Barcelona. Import companies are shutting down. The counterfeiting shed is collapsing and thus threatens the main business of Chinese in de Catalunya. Most employers are reluctant to go because a lot of money and effort had been invested in starting up their businesses, but they are now looking for other opportunities in Madrid and Europe.
The problems affect all sectors, including piracy. Badalona Sud, the site hosts the largest concentration of Chinese enterprises for Catalan import and export: more than eighty. However Badalonesa Police, in collaboration with the regional and national police seized, in 2008, counterfeit goods valued at 24.5 million. Last year, however, seizures were not worth a million euros.
According to Ferran Falco, police pressure may have caused traffickers to take more precautions. "But so marked is the decrease in seizures, is a sign of a slump in demand. The fakes are cheap products, but not necessities. All indications are that the decline in seizures is due to the economic crisis, a decline in their demand and consumption. More than 206,000 containers from China entered the Port of Barcelona in 2008. Last year, 46,000 less.
"It does not pay to bring containers from China, demand for bazaar goods is so low that factories do not discount anymore " said Soun Lam Chuen, chairman of the Federation of Chinese Associations of Catalonia. Now his business is in Madrid. There the Chinese have teamed up to place their orders and get a good price. Therefore, the Chinese Catalans look to Madrid, because China is increasing its exports to Madrid. But here everything is getting worse. Chinese hairdressers lose customers because of the stigma of prostitution, They can not open more restaurants, the textile market is saturated ... Still, the Chinese will not march from Catalonia. They like to deal with Catalan people.
