Firms and households defaulting on bills fell by 62% in January
The average amount of unpaid bills in January was 1,787 euros, 39.5% lower than the same month last year, and below the average, which was of 2,228 euros, 16.2% less
The amount of unpaid bills (which have not been repaid at maturity) of families and companies operating in Spain reached 745 million euros in January, representing 62% against the same month in 2009.
In January there was over 8.77 million due, 15.6 percent less than the same month of 2009, and its amount reached 19.544 million, a decrease of 29.3 percent. The percentage of unpaid bills of exchange on overdue bills was 4.8 percent. The average amount of unpaid bills in January was 1,787 euros, 39.5% lower than the same month last year, and below the average, which was of 2,228 euros, 16.2% less.
Banks managed the largest number of unpaid bills, with 289,191 (-31.9%) and also recorded the highest percentage of overdue debt, to 4.9%, one tenth above the average while the average of these effects was of 1,610 euros (-37.7%).
Communities that experienced the largest average amount of the unpaid bills were Canarias (3,181 euros), Balearic Islands (3,152) and Castilla-La Mancha (3,093). The highest percentage of bad debt on to losers was Balearic Islands (5.5%), Catalonia and Madrid (5.2% in both cases), and Canary Islands and Extremadura (5.1% in both).
