French Police officer Killed slain in shootout with ETA suspects
The 52 year-old officer was part of a patrol which halted a speeding car near a garage in Dammarie-les-Lys, east of Paris at around 7.15 p.m. (1815 GMT).
A French police officer was killed late Tuesday in a shootout near Paris with suspected members of the Basque militant group ETA, Spanish police said overnight in Madrid.
The 52 year-old officer was part of a patrol which halted a speeding car near a garage in Dammarie-les-Lys, east of Paris at around 7.15 p.m. (1815 GMT).
Three ETA suspects immediately opened fire when they were confronted by the slain officer and a second police officer.
‘We think it was a commando group of between four and six people including a woman,’ the source said.
Two of the suspects were able to flee the scene but a third was arrested, authorities said.
The incident came weeks after the arrest of senior ETA leader Ibon Gogeascoechea in France last month, the latest in a series of blows to the armed separatist group
