Hospital Clínic de Barcelona obtained the first accreditation for cell therapy research.

This certification, awarded for the first time in Catalonia, allows it to produce drugs in gene therapy, cell therapy and tissue engineering.

The transplant coordinator of the Hospital Clínic, Blanca Miranda, and the president of the Catalan Transplant Organization, Roser Deulofeu, today unveiled the Tissue Bank plans, which is located in the health park Sant Joan de Déu in Sant Boi Llobregat (Barcelona).

The Spanish Medicines Agency has granted the Clinic Tissue Bank GMP quality seal of the European Union, the necessary certification to conduct research in the field of regenerative medicine and for obtaining medicines included within the advanced therapies.

Blanca Miranda has been suggested that this recognition is the result of the effort to establish a system of quality facilities, processes and personnel working in this space.

Among other measures, it must have extreme temperature conditions and sterility, "which are higher than those of an operating room," said Miranda. Thus, if a doctor in an operating room can deliver 50,000 microparticles, in the Tissue Bank one "issues 6,000 thanks to aseptic suits."

Having obtained the GMP certification, the Tissue Bank is expecting that the Spanish Agency of Medicines will give permission to start three clinical trials of cell therapy related to the treatment of colon cancer, Crohn's disease and opacity of the cornea. The latter two could start this year, according to Miranda.
