Sega has just launched a new Mario game, this time he is having fun in the snow with the arrival of Nintendo's latest "New Super Mario Bros Wii '(20 November), which will probably become a classic. At the beginning of next year there will be sequel to 'Mario Galaxy'.
The birth of Mario's anecdotes. In 1980, Shigeru Miyamoto, had entered as an artist because his father knew the former Nintendo president, Hiroshi Yamauchi, he was commissioned to develop a recreational game starring Popeye and Olive for the U.S. market. However, the company lost its rights to those characters and Miyamoto offered to create new ones.

Thus was born the video game 'Donkey Kong' where the protagonist, a carpenter named Jumpman must rescue a lady dodging the barrels with a gorilla suit on.

As he had done with Atari’s 'Ping Pong', he put the machine in a bar and the next morning he collected thirty dollars. 'Donkey Kong' became a hit which sold 60,000.

At that time it was renamed "Nintendo thought the name was unimpressive for the western market-and, in jest, suggested to the U.S. subsidiary to name him Mario from the resemblance it had with Mario Segali, owner of the Nintendo building in America. He liked the new name and was well known thereafter.

Mario has barely changed in twenty years, but his appearance is largely due to technical limitations that existed when Miyamoto created it. "I wanted to fashion a middle-aged man with a great sense of justice and not to handsome," says Miyamoto. That's how he designed his outfit with several characteristic features: hat, monkey shirt underneath and a big moustache to give him personality. And as colour, Nintendo red, of course.

In 1985, finally Mario become the king of the console with 'SuperMario Bros' for the original Nintendo. That title was the biggest seller of video game history (more than 40 million copies sold, second only to 'Wii Sports', a game that is sold standard with the Wii).

Mario has appeared in over one hundred games he has created his own world playing almost all genres (from soccer to basketball, go-karting and tennis, going through puzzles, to artistic creation). And many of them are always on lists of the best and best-selling titles in history.

Mario's jump to 3D in 1996 with the Nintendo 64, surrounded by an expectation that promised to reinvent the game. 'Mario 64' surpassed anything imaginable, with unprecedented three-dimensional graphics, a level design and development that laid the foundation for the future.

The system also continued with the first 3D platform game for Mario on Wii: 'Mario Galaxy', which again broke new ground for the industry. This new adventure continued the development of the plumber, like 'Mario 64' but introduced the concept of gravity, allowing him to run through walls and ceilings, thus opening a new world of possibilities for development. New costumes and dreamlike graphics for Wii gave a rounded "galactic" experience.
