Patricia Ortega, becomes the first woman lieutenant colonel in the Spanish armed forces
Later she continued her training at the Polytechnic School of the Army, where she reached the rank of captain of the Corps of Engineers and earned a Engineering Construction degree in 1992.
Lt. Col. Ortega was the first woman to join the Spanish armed forces, in 1988 at the Military Academy in Zaragoza, where she obtained the rank of student-lieutenant and after taking her degree in Agricultural Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Madrid, the Defense Ministry said in a statement.
Later she continued her training at the Polytechnic School of the Army, where she reached the rank of captain of the Corps of Engineers and earned a Engineering Construction degree in 1992.
Currently, Ortega, who also has a Masters is responsible for one of the engineering teams of the Department of Infrastructure.
The Defense Ministry said that 16,412 women are now part of the Armed Forces, representing 12 percent of the total workforce, of which 10,222 belong to the Army, the Navy 2666, the Air Force 2891 and 633 to Common Bodies.
Spain is the second country with a higher percentage of women in the armed forces, according to the Ministry, after France, with 14 per cent of women.
