Pope Benedict XVI today named Bishop Ricardo Blazquez Perez, 68, archbishop of Valladolid
Ricardo Blázquez was born in Villanueva del Campillo, in the Castilian province of Avila in 1942. He studied at the minor seminary of Avila (from 1955 to 1960) and in the major seminary of Avila (1960 to 1967).
The new archbishop of the Castilian city replaced Braulio Rodriguez, who was appointed archbishop of Toledo and primate of Spain in April last year and took office on 21 June 2009. Ricardo Blázquez was born in Villanueva del Campillo, in the Castilian province of Avila in 1942. He studied at the minor seminary of Avila (from 1955 to 1960) and in the major seminary of Avila (1960 to 1967). He was ordained in 1967 and has a doctorate in theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome.
Back to Avila, he was secretary of the Theological Institute, Abulense, between 1972 and 1976. In 1977 he went to Salamanca, where he taught dogmatic theology (as Professor) Faculty of Theology at the Pontifical University of Salamanca. In 1988 he was appointed by John Paul II auxiliary bishop of Santiago de Compostela, in 1992 he was appointed bishop of Palencia and in 1995 Bishop of Bilbao, a post he occupied until now. In 2005 he was elected president of the Spanish Episcopal Conference (CEE), a post he held for three years.
On 4 March 2008 he was relieved as head of the EEC by Antonio Maria Rouco Varela and elected vice president of the bishops, to replace Cardinal Antonio Canizares, now prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments. He is the author of several books, including "The Resurrection in Christology" and "Jesus, the gospel of God."
