The priest confessed to parishioners at Mass that he had "taken money out" of the brotherhoods funds. The Archbishop of Toledo, Braulio Rodriguez has dismissed the parish priest for the villages of Noez and Totanés. The priest, 27, spent the money in less than a year.
The priest publicly confessed before the congregation at twelve o'clock Mass on Sunday, that he had "taken the money" and pledged to meet with the brethren to try to fix the situation.
Asked if the priest spent the money in sexual activities, the mayor acknowledged that residents of the two villages had "comments of this kind." He believes that the archdiocese "has acted as I should do", given the financial irregularities detected in the Fraternities and the Brotherhoods.
"This is a very small town and there is a lot of talk and speculation" the mayor said, noting that the pastor arrived in the spring of 2009.
For his part, the Mayor of Totana, Gonzalo Rojas, told Efe that he was aware "but not officially" about the dismissal of the pastor, and he also referred to "rumors" from villagers, particularly in recent days, but did not want to be more explicit about the tenor of this comments.
The archbishop of Toledo had initiated disciplinary proceedings as provided for in canon law and therefore "determined that the parish priest has finished his priestly ministry, parish and school. It has been determined further that the financial irregularities detected in the parish and the fraternities and sororities are corrected immediately, from the diocesan administration.
Archbishop apologizes to the individuals and entities affected and "relies on the help of prayer and divine mercy," he said in the release.
