The market for second-hand cars in 2009 generated a turnover of 7,720 million euros, representing a decrease of 7 percent compared with revenues accounted for the preceding year. GANVAM (motor trade monitoring) stressed that 2009 ended with a turnover of more used cars than initially planned, as the market regained an upward trend in the second half of the year, thanks to the implementation of the Plan 2000E. Thus, in the last quarter, second-hand car sales surged by 4.8 percent.

In fact, Spain is still located far from other major European second hand car markets, the UK, sold 3.2 used cars for 1 new, France 2.7 used cars for 1 new and Italy 2.1 used for each new.

Sales of used cars fell in all the autonomous communities. The largest falls were in Valencia (-16.2 percent), Baleares (-12.5 percent), Canarias (-10.9 percent) and Andalusia (-7.8 percent). On the other hand, sales of used cars imported from other countries fell 36 percent in 2009, with 35,221 units, and six brands (Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, Renault, Ford, Peugeot and Opel) accounted for 72 percent of deliveries.
