School canteens across Spain will, from April, have guidelines to develop healthy menus
After his appearance before the Committee on Health and Consumer Affairs of the Congress of Deputies, Sabrido explained that this measure will be implemented with the approval of the Law on Food Safety and Nutrition
From April school canteens across Spain will develop common standards for healthy menus tailored to children of varying ages and the vending of food or drink with less sugar and fat, it will encourage fruit, soft drinks and sandwiches, announced the president of the Spanish Agency of Food Safety and Nutrition (AESAN), Roberto Sabrido.
After his appearance before the Committee on Health and Consumer Affairs of the Congress of Deputies, Sabrido explained that this measure will be implemented with the approval of the Law on Food Safety and Nutrition, which has just completed its public hearing phase, and they hope to have, in April, a consensus document developed jointly, with consumers and businesses.
According to the chairman of AESAN, the future standard will establish "common standards" for school meals, depending on each age group, "the most appropriate type of menu, with nutritional information, which will also help parents to learn how to give good food to their children.
In this line, the bill sets out that schools must make companies, responsible for food vending machines, "eliminate high-fat products, sugar and salt", including pastries, and inclusiveness, "more juice, soft drinks, sandwiches and fruit".
Moreover, in reviewing the objectives of AESAN 2010, Sabrido announced for this year the beginning and the presentation of results from a national epidemiological study on obesity in children that "weighed and measured" all children up to14 in order to have "reliable data on obesity in Spain".
