Spain plans possible increase the 420 euro payments to long term unemployed
In his appearance before the Permanent Deputation Members of Congress to explain the current situation of unemployment, the minister gave another big blow to the opposition.
Long term unemployment benefits,Labour Minister Celestino Corbacho, is in favour of extending the aid of 420 euros for the unemployed who have exhausted their normal unemployment benefits, because the causes for high and long term unemployment have not changed, due to the economic crisis. For those who have already agreed to aid, if after the six month they still have not found work, they should receive the appropriate response in their respective autonomous communities.

In his appearance before the Permanent Deputation Members of Congress to explain the current situation of unemployment, the minister gave another big blow to the opposition. All groups harshly criticized him for the delay in acting to help those in need, negligence in signing a partnership agreement and, above all, manifested by difficulties in diagnosing the problem and propose solutions.
Members expressed disappointment at the tone of the debate, since they not only expected more content in the analysis. but also in the solutions, as stated by the deputy of the CiU Carles Campuzano, whose speech was applauded by the other groups, to put on the table the risks for the future.
Congressman Emilio Olavarria PNV criticized the tardiness of his appearance and the "brevity" of his speech. Much harder was Jose Ignacio Echaniz, from the CP, whom called him a coward when it came to quantify the number of unemployed and accused him of having done "absolutely nothing".
While most importantly, he told the deputies that "the future economic model will not be as generous in job creation as the former" (construction), he said technology will improve and increase productivity, but might not translate into more employability. And even less, he said, if we consider that our workforce is low skilled. "If anyone thinks that this situation may change in six months, frankly it is not possible. He has no idea what we talked about." He explained that the change in model will be a slow process with a long transitional period.
In this context the minister explained that unemployment will continue to grow. The figure of registered unemployed in the public employment service (INEM) for January presented a moderate rise. Based on the evidence available, said to be located on the normal average for this month (87,000 people) and will be more like the figure in 2008 (132,378 people) than to that of 2009 (198,838 registered unemployed). In short, unemployment will increase further during 2010. We still can not terminate the phase of job losses, although "we are in the final stages of destruction of jobs."
