Spain’s National Court Judge Marlaska questioned 24 members of the Russian-Georgian mafia
The detainees are accused of conspiracy, money laundering, coercion, extortion, drug trafficking and weapons possession, it is also thought some maybe charged with conspiracy to murder
The National Court Judge Fernando Grande-Marlaska has begun to question the 24 suspected members of the Russian-Georgian mafia arrested in several Spanish provinces as part of "Operation Java, which has led to the arrest of 80 people in five other European countries.
Legal sources have said that the intention of Marlaska, is to complete the his questions before next Thursday. The detainees are accused of conspiracy, money laundering, coercion, extortion, drug trafficking and weapons possession, it is also thought some maybe charged with conspiracy to murder.
Coordinated by Marlaska, Operation "Java" has led to the arrest of 15 members of the group in the province of Barcelona, including Kakhaber Shushanasvili, one of the ringleaders, who used Catalunya as the main centre.
In addition, the National Police arrested four other people in the Valencia, and one other person in Guadalajara, while the Ertzaintza arrested four members of the network in the Basque country, including his accountant. Dozens of officers took part in the operation including officers from the Drugs Unit and Organized Crime Unit (UDYCO) of the National Police and the Ertzaintza.
Outside Spain, the operation was implemented primarily in Austria, Germany and Switzerland, France and Italy, where they have conducted independent investigations coordinated by the Spanish anti-corruption prosecutor. However, the global head of the Georgian mafia, Lasha Shushanasvili managed to flee as officers swooped in Greece yesterday.
