Tuberculosis TB increased slightly in Spain and Catalunya, with 1422 infected

Through a statement, tuberculosis TB increased slightly said SEPAR, the Spanish Society of Pneumology and Thoracic Surgery, recalled that the data from the National Epidemiology Center indicate that in 2008 there were 6619 cases of tuberculosis in Spain, 73 cases more than in 2007 and 768 more than in 2006. "An estimated one third of cases go unreported, so these numbers are necessarily higher, according to estimates by SEPAR," said its president, Juan Ruiz Manzano .

This condition third in incidence and is surpassed only by the flu and chickenpox.

In number of reported cases is followed by Andalusia (922), Madrid (857) and Valencia (691). In contrast, in proportion to their population, Ceuta (48.70 cases per 100,000 population) and Galicia (22.52), are in first place and La Rioja (21. 37) and Melilla (20.77) in third and fourth place respectively. Catalunya, despite its large number of cases stands at sixth in proportion to its population (19.94), preceded by Aragon (20.51). Given the importance of early diagnosis of HIV infection, SEPAR specialists have recommended a test to detect this disease in patients presenting themselves with suspected tuberculosis or certain pneumonias.

The tuberculosis specialist and member of SEPAR, Caylà Joan, has held that "practitioners of respiratory diseases are involved in the fight against AIDS through early diagnosis thanks to the alert that involves certain pneumonias and tuberculosis. Moreover, the figures confirm the close relationship between AIDS and respiratory infections such as in Spain, according to data from the National AIDS Registry, in 2003-2007 there were 8786 cases, of whom 29.2 percent were diagnosed after presenting themselves for tuberculosis, 22.7 percent to Pneumocystis jirovecii (formerly Pneumocystis carinii) and 6.5 percent for bacterial pneumonia recurrence.

Another point to highlight separately is the coincidence in the high prevalence of tuberculosis in the immigrant community, in 2007 they represented 20.7 percent of people with AIDS in Spain.
