Use of public and private libraries of Catalonia has increased 9.4% between 2006 and 2008.
Books were the most wanted in Catalan libraries, accounting for 54.6% of home loan, followed by audiovisual documents accounting for 27.1%.
The number of registered users reached 3.6 million in late 2008, and the number of visitors recorded was 41.3 million between 2006 and 2008.
The main increase of users was in the Girona region (+23.4%), Terres de l'Ebre (+23.9) and in the region of central Catalonia (+13%), compared to a reduction experienced in Camp de Tarragona (-22.7%) and the High Pyrenees and Aran (-15.3%).
Books were the most wanted in Catalan libraries, accounting for 54.6% of home loan, followed by audiovisual documents accounting for 27.1%.
Indeed, audiovisual loans registered an increase of 46.8% over 2006, while books rose 10.4%. The use of public computers in libraries went up by 89%, users have 7772 computers available to them, almost double than in 2002. However, not all have Internet access.
In fact, of the 775 libraries with computers, 94.7% have a connection, but the availability of the Internet for public use represents 84.1%, since the rest is for internal use.
Of the total of 818 libraries surveyed, 420 are dependent on local authorities (51.3%) 169 depend on the Government (20.7%), 134 are privately owned (16.4%), 53 depend on universities (6 , 5%), and the remaining 27 are run through different organizations (3.3%).
